“Whatever you have was given to you, so you are expected to give back. Whatever you achieved through your individual hard work, society gave you the opportunity to succeed and prosper. So you are expected to give similar returns to society.
If you are a part of your community, then you are expected to give to, as well as take from, your community. Since the future of a community relies on its children and young adults, the community needs to make continuous and proper investments in its young, in order to expect an adequate return on their investments for its elders.
There is an Akan (Ghana) proverb which states “The old woman looks after the child to grow its teeth and the young one in turn looks after the old woman when she loses her teeth.” The young are nurtured by the adult community, and in turn nurture their elders later on in life. This is how communities (as well as societies and civilizations) grow; this is how its people grow.”
